Tips to buying a new bike

Buying a new bike is a big investment.

Whether you are doing triathlon, trail, MTB, BMX, cycle cross or pedaling along the bike path for fitness, it's important to buy a bike that suits your requirements.

Our recommendation before you walk into a bike shop is to know these things:

  1. What do you want your bike to do?
  2. What is your budget?

Here are some suggestions that will help you in your search for a new bike;

  1. Have a bike fit first! The idea of a bike fit is to ensure that the bike fits you. There are so many elements to ensuring the right fit for your bike. It's more than frame sizing.
  2. Do not buy the first bike you see.
  3. Do not buy a bike because you like the colour or it's a good price (it will cost you in the long run)
  4. Do your research. Watch videos, read reviews, have questions ready to ask the staff, no question is too dumb in our store.
  5. Ask friends where they bought their bike from and if they were happy with the service they received.
  6. Read the Google reviews of the store....this tells you a lot about the business.
  7. If you feel pressured into buying a bike, walk away. Often stores are trying to move bikes to make room for new season bikes.
  8. Be aware that each person is different and a bike that fits a friend of the same height as you won't necessarily mean that it will fit you properly. There are several different measurements used for a good bike fit. It is based on the three points of contact where the bike and your body meet. That's your feet, hands and saddle areas.

We have seen many secondhand bikes that are damaged or are running componentry that is obsolete. There is nothing worse than having to tell a customer that their 'new' bike is beyond repair or that it needs a full upgrade to work.

The worst one is having to tell them that their expensive new bike frame is a fake. (That was a horrifying experience)
